Subject: Psychological Field is Pro Choice!
Date: March 1, 2004 11:53 pm

The Psychological profession many times is at odds with our fundamental beliefs. Today the National Association of Social Workers has begun a Pro Choice Campaign. In their letter of appeal to all Social Workers they address those that are Pro-Life advocates as a “vocal minority.” Yet, they fail to mention that we have the Great Advocate with us…the one who makes all known and whose voice echoes from one end of the earth to the other.

Let us support those in the psychological field that stand firm for Christ and consecrate all those in psychological professions to Our Most Holy Mother’s Immaculate Heart.

The following is a report posted by the National Association of Social Workers:

Family Planning and Reproductive Choice

Although a vocal minority has wielded undue influence on government policies and decisions regarding family planning, reproductive freedom, and individual choice, the social work profession’s position on abortion, family planning, and other reproductive health services is based on the principle of self-determination. If an individual social worker chooses not to participate in the provision of abortion or other specific reproductive health services, it is his or her responsibility to provide appropriate referral services to ensure that this option is available to all clients.
Lack of funding for abortion for poor women, decreased availability of family planning services, and our current system of welfare reform with financial disincentives to pregnancy and childbearing, with no mention of family planning or abortion services or the responsibility of men in contraception and child rearing, clearly work to the disadvantage of women. Inequities in access to and funding for reproductive health services, including abortion services must be eliminated to ensure that self-determination is a reality for all and that the nature of reproductive health care services a client receives is a matter of private, individual choice. Adequate financing is necessary to make family planning programs and professional services available to all, regardless of their ability to pay.
The use of contraception reduces but will never eliminate the need for access to emergency contraception and to abortion services. Therefore, women must have the right to decide for themselves, with the advice of qualified medical service providers, whether or not to carry a pregnancy to term. At the same time, the use of all reproductive health care services must be voluntary. Women of color, those in institutions, and those from other vulnerable groups should not be used in the testing and development of reproductive techniques and technologies
