Today's excerpt is from Bl. Elizabeth of the Trinity:

"Never has God made me understand so well that suffering is the greatest
pledge of love He can give His creature. Oh, you see, with each new
suffering, I kiss the Cross of my Master, and I say to Him, 'Thank you, I
am not worthy of it', for I think how suffering was the companion of His
life, and I do not deserve to be treated as the Father treated Him. In
speaking of Jesus Christ, one saint wrote, 'Where, then, did He dwell but
in suffering?' and David sang that this suffering was as immense as the
sea. Every soul crushed by suffering, in whatever form it may occur, can
tell itself: I dwell with Jesus Christ, we are living in intimacy, the
same dwelling shelters us! The saint of whom I just spoke says that the
sign by which we recognize that God is in us and His love posseses us is
that we receive not only patiently but gratefully whatever wounds us and
makes us suffer. To reach that state, we must contemplate the God
crucified by love, and that contemplation, if it is true, never fails to
end in the love of suffering...Receive every trial, every annoyance, every
lack of courtesy in the light that springs from the Cross; that is how we
please God, how we advance in the ways of love." (from her Complete Works,
