Annulments
Divorce is a very painful process that in many leaves behind a deep scar. The Catholic Therapist needs to be sensitive to the Catholic client and their Sacramental needs.
It is a time of great confusion and some believe that they are no longer part of the Church. The divorced person should be encouraged to attend Mass.
I believe that as Catholic Counselor’s we play a very active part in ministering and helping our clients choose a Christ-centered life style. It is important that we promote frequenting the Sacraments and understand that divorce does not mean freedom to date and remarry. If our clients have remarried they can pursue an annulment in order to receive the Sacraments and if they have remarried they can receive Spiritual Communion. The Lord loves and cares for them. The Church is their home. A Catholic Counselor should be prepared to minister to each person individually and understand the annulment process because for many it is the last stage in the healing process.
When a couple marries, they intend to stay together for life. Their future hopes and dreams are very much linked together. Marriages don’t fail because couples want them to. They fail for very real reasons. Catholic Therapist working with couples or individuals who have questions or concerns about their children after an annulment must be able to explain that the declaration of nullity concerning a marriage in a Catholic Church tribunal does not affect in any way the legitimacy of the children.
Apprehension before beginning the annulment process is to be expected. For instance, the extensive questionnaire will remind the client of past aspects of his or her married life and may be painful. Yet, at the same time, it will provide opportunity for healing. This is a very good time for the Catholic Counselor to minister to his or her client.
The Annulment process is a way to peace and healing. I pray that you are comforted by the power of the Holy Spirit and that Our Lady may keep you within the protection of Her Immaculate Mantle. Just remember that the Church loves and cares for you and is ready to reach out to help whenever you are ready to receive that help. Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers as you read this. If you are struggling with the decision of annulment and would like to set up a face to face or phone session please feel free to email me.
God bless,
